NORTH COUNTY BREAKFAST
REST IN PEACE, Fire Captain Carrie Henger, Los Angeles County Fire Department PDF Print E-mail
From Bill:

It is with deep sadness that I write this letter.

On Thursday, March 4th, at around midnight, Carrie Henger lost her battle with cancer and passed away. Those of you who knew Carrie, know she has been fighting this battle long and hard for many years. In fact, as one Deputy Chief stated to me last night, she fought longer and harder than anyone he had ever known.

Carrie was a Captain with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and retired early due to her illness in late 2009 with over 20 years of service. She was also a member of CATF2 FEMA Team as a Canine Handler with her current canine partner, "Doc". Carrie was the Departments first canine handler with her first dog "Spanner". She re-certified several times with "Spanner". Additionally, she achieved the level of having a certified arson canine named "Sprocket". Carrie worked several local agency fires with "Sprocket" and deployed to the earthquake in Iran and Hurricane Katrina as well as local emergencies with her search canine partners, "Spanner" and "Doc". She helped develop the LACoFD Canine program and policies that many other Departments around the Country have also adopted. The success of the Canine program for our Department has grown to the level it is, because of her pioneering efforts.

I personally worked and trained with Carrie for many years, she was an avid animal lover and devoted a great deal of her time to the enrichment of the canine program. I know now her struggle is over and she is in a better place. Take care my friend, I know you and Spanner are a team again.

Sincerely,

Captain Billy Monahan
& Search Dog Hunter
